Great shot!

How far away from them are you with the 200mm on this shot? I have to go do a photoshoot of some friends on bikes on a track in a couple weeks... and they want photos like this. I'm debating whether I want to go 300mm or even longer

Thank you senor!! I'm probably 20ft away or so? Not that far, and I'm on the ground, probably 4 or 5 inches off the side of the track :) I would suggest getting as long a zoom as you can afford.

yeah 20 feet wont cut it where I'm going. They are pretty cautious about not letting you get anywhere near the track... I was considering renting either the Canon 300mm F4L or the 400mm 5.6L. the 400 doesnt have image stabilization but it'll be in a really bright area so probably won't need it.

Awesome man! Check out my EXIF data for shutter speeds and stuff, but I usually shoot around 1/1500 sec if the guys aren't going suuuper fast, ISO 200 or so, and I like to get around f/5-7 if I can and just pan with them a little, although I probably don't need to. That's usually enough exposure to keep some rotation in the wheels to imply movement, but still freezing the rider and their bike. Good luck man, and be sure to post your results, I would love to see them :D

Nice capture! Do they really lean on their knees through a turn or does it only look that way?

Thank you! Yes, they do get on their knees through a turn. This guy is a bodybuilder, so he's not very flexible. But the skinny/tall riders will even drag their elbow on the ground through a turn. Helps them define a more conducive center of gravity through the turn and also tells them how close they are to the ground :)

Thanks for the interesting info. It sounds like you are not a mere spectator of this sport....

You're welcome :) And very keen! I used to race when I was in college. Now I take pictures :) It gives me a cool perspective, because I know how to expect the riders through turns, and know how they'll be holding their body. Combined with where the sun is and how close I can get to the track, that makes for excellent photos :w00t:

It sure does! You probably know some people too, to get a little closer than some.... Do you follow Motocross also? Those look like exciting races too.
